CAREERS CONSULTANCY

Choosing the right career is one of life's major decisions. To help young people start planning their adult lives we offer various careers advice options. Most students will have an hour long meeting with a careers consultant, having first done one or more of the online psychometric tests explained below. During the meeting we will talk through possible careers and then establish a plan with the student about what they will need to do to prepare in terms of education, work experience and training. They will then receive a report following the meeting.

GCSE STUDENTS 14-16 YEARS

It is helpful for those doing GCSEs to have advice about careers before they choose their A Levels or IB subjects. Students are able to do the Cambridge Occupational Analysts Preview Test online before a one to one meeting with the careers consultant.

Preview assesses a pupil's interests and personal qualities and matches them with needs and requirements of more than 45 broad career areas. From this a workbook is produced which states the pupil's own basic career direction and asks a range of questions for the pupil to address. Students receive:

  • A 25 page bound workbook - the 'Report'
  • Careers Analysis Forms for further research
  • A copy of The Careers Directory
  • A copy of the Work Experience and Personal Development Guide for Students
  • The Cambridge Profile Aptitude Tests (optional – see below)
  • A personal one-to-one hour long interview with a Careers Consultant

APTITUDE TESTS AGES 15-17

Employers and careers advisers increasingly use aptitude tests as aids in assessing a candidate's potential for a particular job or career. In almost every careers field, one or more of the test scores may throw light on a person's suitability for aspects of the work. These tests are valuable for pupils, providing an objective assessment of their academic potential. Also, practice in tests of this kind can help pupils gain confidence and avoid stress when they are presented with similar tests by employers or academic institutions in the future. Composed and designed by COA, the eight individual tests take approximately one hour and 45 minutes to administer. These tests are also helpful in determining which schools pupils could consider for A Levels or the IB.

The tests comprise:
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Numerical Reasoning
  • Abstract Reasoning
  • 2D Spatial Reasoning
  • 3D Spatial Reasoning
  • Arithmetic Calculation
  • Working Quickly and Accurately
  • Spelling

The results are shown as percentiles. This shows how the pupil has performed overall in comparison to other pupils of comparable age and ability range. They also provide speed and accuracy bar graphs to throw greater light on each individual's performance. We provide explanatory brochures for parents.

STUDENTS AGED 16 + OASIS CAREERS TEST

Students in the final two years of school who are planning to apply to university are able to take the OASIS psychometric careers test. This test assesses performance at GCSE, AS/A level, IB or equivalent examination potential. The programme contains four overlapping ability bands, and chooses careers which broadly equate with the pupil's staff forecast of ability in relevant subjects eg Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Physics for Medicine.

By taking part each student receives:
  • A 25 page bound workbook - the 'Report'
  • Careers Analysis Forms for further personal research
  • A copy of The Careers Directory
  • A copy of the Work Experience and Personal Development Guide for Students
  • The Cambridge Profile Aptitude Tests (optional)
  • A personal one-to-one hour long interview with a Careers Consultant
